Using DVD's in Classrooms

We have a few different computer models used in our classrooms. With the exception of specialized classrooms or labs, every presentation computer has a DVD drive built into it. If you do happen to come across one of the few classroom computers that do not have a DVD drive (ex. Converse 311, Converse 304, Foster 110, Dick 103), you can check out an external DVD drive from the Giovale Library circulation desk.

Below we will review where the disk drive is for each computer model and how to play a DVD.

Locating the Disk Drive

This is an HP EliteOne 800. The disk drive is on the back lefthand side of the computer. There is a little button you need to press to eject the disk drive.

If you want to use an external DVD drive, the USB ports are underneath the computer on the lefthand side of the computer.

This is a Dell OptiPlex 7480. The disk drive is on the righthand side of the base/stand of the computer. There is a label that says “DVD DRIVE →” on most of these computers.

If you want to use an external DVD drive, the USB ports are on the lefthand side of the computer.

This is a Dell OptiPlex 9020. The disk drive is on the back of the computer on the righthand side. The button is on the very side of the computer.

If you want to use an external DVD drive, the USB ports are on the left side of the computer.

Playing the DVD

Once the DVD has been inserted, a little popup window will come up asking what you want to do with the DVD. Click on this window and select Play DVD movie.

If you do not click on that popup in time, you can also open VLC Media Player by typing “VLC” into the Start search bar and selecting the app that comes up.

Then select Media, Open Disc, make sure your DVD is selected, then click Play.
